THE MAP

Four states hold 38% of US business jets

Utah (1,650), Texas (1,570), Florida (1,515), and Delaware (1,490) lead the register, together 38% of all business jets with a US address. Texas and Florida are there because that is where owners live and fly. Utah and Delaware are there because of who owners use as their address.

TOP MODEL BY STATE

The most common business jet in each state

21 different jets lead the 44 states with at least five of one model. The Cirrus Vision Jet SF50 is the most common jet in 9 of them. The number after each state is how many of that jet are registered there.

Most common in one state each: Bombardier Challenger 300 / 350 / 3500 (Ohio, 104); Embraer Phenom 300 / 300E (Mississippi, 20); Bombardier Challenger 604 / 605 / 650 (Connecticut, 9); Dassault Falcon 900 / 900EX / 900LX (Illinois, 17); Gulfstream GIV / GIV-SP / G300 / G400 (California, 69); Beechcraft Beechjet 400 / 400A / Hawker 400XP (Kansas, 46); Cessna Citation X / X+ (New York, 30); Gulfstream G700 / G800 (Georgia, 135); Learjet 35 / 36 (Michigan, 46); Pilatus PC-24 (New Hampshire, 21); Hawker 1000 (Maine, 8).

WHY UTAH AND DELAWARE

A mailing address is not a home base

The registry records where the owner receives mail. For most business jets the owner is a company, and that company often gives a trust company or a registered agent as its address. A few states collect those addresses.

  • Utah: trust companies1,771 of Utah’s 2,154 business aircraft are registered to a trustee. TVPX and Bank of Utah, both in Utah, hold 1,753 aircraft between them, often for owners who are not US citizens. Aircraft owner trusts.
  • Delaware: registered agentsOwners form LLCs in Delaware and use the registered agent’s office as the address. 267 aircraft are registered at Corporation Service Company's Wilmington office alone. 78% of Delaware’s aircraft sit at an address shared by five or more owners.
  • Wyoming and Montana: holding companies59% of Wyoming’s and 33% of Montana’s aircraft are at shared addresses. Montana has no sales tax, and an LLC formed there is a common way to register vehicles and aircraft.
  • Ohio and Kansas: operators and makersOhio has 257 co-owned aircraft, largely fractional shares (NetJets is based in Columbus). Kansas has more aircraft registered to corporations (402) than to LLCs, unusual for a large state; Wichita is where Textron Aviation builds Citations and King Airs.

1,163 business jets have their name and address withheld by the FAA at the owner’s request and 65 have an address abroad. Neither is in the state counts.

QUESTIONS

Private jets by state: questions

Which state has the most private jets?

On the FAA register, Utah has the most business jets (1,650), then Texas (1,570) and Florida (1,515). Counting turboprops as well, Texas leads with 2,409 aircraft. These are mailing addresses, so Texas and Florida are the largest states by where jets are actually owned and flown.

Why are so many jets registered in Utah and Delaware?

Utah is home to the two trust companies that hold the most US aircraft as trustee, TVPX (1,192) and Bank of Utah (561). Delaware is where many owning LLCs are formed, and their registered agent's office often doubles as the mailing address. 78% of Utah's and 78% of Delaware's business aircraft are registered at an address shared by five or more owners.

Does the state on the registration show where a jet is based?

No. The FAA records the owner's mailing address. For a jet held by a trust company or an LLC that uses a registered agent, that address is an office in Salt Lake City or Wilmington, not the hangar. Flight data would show where aircraft are based; this count uses none.

METHOD

How this is counted

  • Which aircraft. 17,557 business jets and 9,074 turboprops on the FAA register, matched to model families on the FAA make and model designation. Airliners, former military jets, crop sprayers and experimental aircraft are left out.
  • State. The state in the registration’s mailing address. Territories are listed when they have aircraft. Registrations with an address abroad, and those whose name and address the FAA withholds, are counted separately.
  • Shared address. An address where 10 or more aircraft are registered to five or more different owner names. Street addresses are used to match and never published.
