BY CLASS
Median ADs in effect, by class
Bigger, older type certificates carry more: a large-cabin type certificate often spans thirty years of variants and adopts every directive its home authority issues. Newer clean-sheet designs start near zero.

Models that share a type certificate model share their ADs and appear as one row. Each name links to its AD page, which lists every AD with its applicability text and the official document.

“+n?”: ADs in effect whose text does not say whether actions repeat; the recurring figure is a floor for those types.
METHODOLOGY
How the ADs are counted
- Source. Every final rule under 14 CFR part 39 in the Federal Register, 1995 to October 1, 2026: 12,857 directives for every kind of product. The Federal Register’s online edition starts in 1994 with a handful of ADs, so earlier ADs, some still in effect on older types, are not counted.
- Matching. An AD counts for a type when its title or applicability names the type certificate holder (or a predecessor) and the FAA model designator the type is registered under. A match means the AD may apply: serial numbers, installed equipment and modifications decide whether it applies to one aircraft. For a designator that starts with a number (the Citation 650, 700 or 680A, the Learjet 45 or 60), the number counts only in a model list (“Model 650”, “Models 525, 525A, and 525B”, “Cessna 650 series”) under the same maker, never as a serial number, part number or address. ADs that list their models only in a table image, and spellings the matcher does not read, can leave a few ADs unmatched.
- Airframe ADs only. Only ADs issued for airplanes are counted. Engine, propeller and appliance ADs that do not name the aircraft are excluded, and so are those that list it among the aircraft they can be installed on, so the model AD pages, which also list those, can show more.
- In effect. Not superseded by a later AD and not removed, as far as the Federal Register shows. Recurring: the AD’s text requires repetitive actions.
- Grouping. Model pages registered under the same FAA designators share every AD and are shown as one row; the Learjet 35A and 36, one type certificate whose ADs name the models apart, are combined. Airliners and piston aircraft are left out.
Radar reads an aircraft’s logbooks and ties each AD to the entries that show how it was complied with. See AD tracking in Radar.
QUESTIONS
AD burden questions
Which business jet has the most airworthiness directives?
Bombardier Challenger 601-3A / 601-3R / 604 / 605 / 650: 104 airframe ADs in effect that name its type certificate model (CL-600-2B16), 20 of them with recurring actions. One type certificate covers every variant here, so the count is shared across them, and older variants carry ADs that newer ones do not.
Does a high AD count mean an aircraft is unsafe?
No. AD counts grow with a type certificate’s age, the number of variants it covers and the number in service, and many ADs adopt a foreign authority’s directive or fix a single part. The count is a measure of compliance workload, the inspections, modifications and records an owner must keep, not of safety.
What is a recurring AD?
An AD whose required actions repeat, usually an inspection at a set interval of hours, cycles or calendar time, until a terminating action is done. Recurring ADs drive maintenance cost and planning, and each occurrence must be recorded in the aircraft’s logbooks.
Why are engine and propeller ADs not counted?
This ranking counts airframe ADs: those issued for the airplane type. Engine, propeller and appliance ADs are issued for those products, so they apply by the engine or propeller fitted rather than by the airframe. Look up any aircraft's full list, by registration, with the FAA AD lookup.
How current is this data?
It is rebuilt with the site from the Federal Register's AD final rules, published through October 1, 2026, and covers ADs from 1995 on. The FAA's Dynamic Regulatory System holds the official list.
