HOW IT WORKS

The trustee is on the register, the owner is not

  • Non-citizen ownersOnly a US citizen or a qualifying resident or company can register an aircraft in the US. An owner trust lets a US trustee hold the registration for a beneficiary who cannot (14 CFR 47.7(c)).
  • Financing and privacyLenders use trusts to hold title to aircraft they finance, and some US owners use them to keep their name off the register.
  • Where trustees areUtah (1,753), Delaware (272), Wyoming (61), Oklahoma (56), counting the largest trustees by their most common state. 1,771 of Utah's 2,154 business aircraft are trust-registered. See business jets by state.
  • People are counted, never named2,689 trust registrations name a company as trustee, 187 a person and 18 a trust with no trustee named. Only the companies appear on this page.

BY MODEL

Trusts favour the biggest jets

12.1% of business jets are trust-registered against 8.4% of turboprops. Long-range jets built to fly between continents lead the list.

QUESTIONS

Owner trust questions

What is an aircraft owner trust?

A trust in which a trustee, usually a bank or trust company, holds legal title to an aircraft and appears on the FAA register, while the beneficiary has the use of it. FAA rules (14 CFR 47.7(c)) let an aircraft be registered in a US trustee's name for a beneficiary who could not register it directly, such as a non-US citizen. Owners and lenders also use trusts for financing and privacy.

Who is the largest aircraft trustee in the US?

TVPX, which holds 1,192 US business jets and turboprops as trustee (1,002 jets). Bank of Utah is second with 561. Together they hold 61% of all trust-registered business aircraft (FAA file of October 5, 2026).

Does the FAA register show who is behind an owner trust?

No. The register names the trustee, not the beneficiary. This page counts trustees and never names the people behind them, or people acting as trustee themselves.

METHOD

How this is counted

  • Trust registrations. A registration counts as a trust when the registrant type is trust or the registrant name says trust or trustee.
  • Trustee names. A trustee is named only when it is an organisation (a bank, trust company or other company). Spellings of one company are folded together, so every TVPX entity counts as TVPX. The CSV lists every company with 10 or more aircraft, up to the 15 largest.
  • State. The most common mailing-address state of each trustee’s registrations.
