This guide focuses primarily on a conventional loan secured by an aircraft. In that structure, underwriting commonly considers both the borrower’s ability to repay and the aircraft’s strength as collateral. A strong borrower does not eliminate collateral diligence, and a desirable aircraft does not establish repayment capacity.

How aircraft financing works
An aircraft loan is generally secured by the aircraft and documented around a purchase, refinance, or recapitalization. The lender advances an agreed portion of supported value or purchase price, the borrower contributes equity, and the loan amortizes over a negotiated period. Some structures mature before the amortization schedule ends, leaving a balloon balance due at maturity.
The basic economic variables are:
- Purchase price: the negotiated acquisition amount.
- Supported value: the value the lender accepts after reviewing market evidence, configuration, condition, and records.
- Advance rate: the portion the lender will finance under its policy.
- Down payment: the borrower’s cash equity, plus transaction costs not financed.
- Interest rate: fixed or floating compensation for the lender’s capital and risk.
- Amortization: the schedule used to calculate principal repayment.
- Maturity: when the remaining balance becomes due.
- Covenants: ongoing promises about insurance, maintenance, use, reporting, and collateral condition.

These decisions interact. A records gap may reduce supported value. A lower value may require more equity. A title issue may postpone closing. An approaching engine event may change both value and the lender’s covenant package.
Aircraft loan types and structures
Purchase loan
The most familiar structure finances part of an aircraft acquisition. The lender typically sets credit, collateral, documentation, and funding conditions. The borrower, seller, lender, escrow or title company, counsel, broker, appraiser, insurer, and technical advisors may each coordinate parts of diligence and closing.
Private jet financing
Private jet financing is aircraft financing for business jets used by individuals, companies, special-purpose ownership entities, or charter operations. The underwriting framework is the same, but cabin configuration, crew and management arrangements, Part 91 or charter use, international operation, engine programs, and major-event exposure can make the collateral review more involved.
A lender evaluating a private jet will often want the complete aircraft specification, operating plan, management agreement where applicable, engine and APU program evidence, current inspection status, damage and modification history, and a valuation that reflects the exact serial number. “Private jet loan” and “business aircraft loan” describe the transaction category; neither removes the need for aircraft-specific diligence.
Refinance
A refinance replaces an existing obligation or pulls equity from an owned aircraft. The lender still needs current value, title, insurance, condition, and records. Existing debt must be released correctly so the new lender’s security position matches the documents.
Business aircraft credit
Loans to operating businesses may rely on company cash flow, guarantees, and the aircraft’s business purpose. Ownership entities, operating agreements, management arrangements, charter use, and tax planning can affect documentation. Aviation counsel and tax advisors should review the proposed structure.
Portfolio or fleet facility
Operators and larger owners may finance several aircraft under one facility. This adds borrowing-base calculations, eligibility rules, cross-collateralization questions, substitution mechanics, and recurring reporting. What determines aircraft loan terms
There is no single “aircraft loan rate.” Terms reflect the full risk picture at the time a lender quotes.
- Borrower credit quality, liquidity, leverage, and experience.

- Loan size, equity contribution, amortization, maturity, and balloon.
- Engine, APU, landing gear, and major inspection status.
- Enrollment and standing in maintenance programs.
- Damage history, modifications, configuration, and conformity.
- Completeness and credibility of maintenance records.
- Registration, ownership, jurisdiction, title, and lien complexity.
- Fixed versus floating rate structure and current capital-market conditions.
Two aircraft with the same model year and total time may support different terms because one has a traceable, inspection-ready history and the other carries unresolved uncertainty.
The finance-ready aircraft records package
Start building the aircraft file before underwriting, not after the first records request. A practical package includes:
- Current aircraft specifications and equipment list.
- Registration and ownership information.
- Purchase agreement or refinance purpose.
- Airframe, engine, APU, and propeller logbooks as applicable.
- Current status reports for Airworthiness Directives, life-limited parts, inspections, and components.
- Major repair and alteration records, including FAA Form 337 where applicable.
- Supplemental Type Certificate and modification support.
- Damage, incident, corrosion, and repair history.
- Engine and APU program enrollment and account status.
- Recent work orders, return-to-service entries, and inspection signoffs.
- Weight and balance, equipment list, and configuration records.
- Title report, lien releases, and relevant international registry evidence.
- Insurance binder or evidence meeting the lender’s requirements.
Aircraft records management should preserve the original page behind every extracted status. A spreadsheet without source evidence is faster to create but harder to defend.
A disciplined financing process
- Define the transaction. Confirm purchase price, desired loan amount, ownership structure, use, location, and closing target.
- Prepare borrower credit. Assemble complete, current financial information in the lender’s requested form.
- Qualify the aircraft. Share the exact serial number, configuration, maintenance status, and records inventory.
- Compare structures. Evaluate rate, equity, amortization, maturity, fees, covenants, prepayment, and lender experience, not payment alone.
- Run records and technical diligence. Coordinate the aircraft pre-buy records review with the physical inspection.

Lenders may need more evidence when they encounter:
- Missing or illegible logbook periods.
- Total-time discontinuities or conflicting component times.
- Life-limited parts without adequate back-to-birth traceability.
- Open, recurring, or poorly documented Airworthiness Directive status.
- Major repairs or alterations without supporting approvals.
- Damage references that do not reconcile across records.
- A purchase price materially above supported market evidence.
- Near-term engine, landing gear, or heavy-inspection exposure.
- Unreleased liens, inconsistent ownership names, or registration problems.
- Insurance terms that do not satisfy closing conditions.
Do not hide an exception inside a large data room. Identify it, explain its consequence, show the source documents, and define the path to resolution.
How maintenance records affect value and financeability
Maintenance records support aircraft identity, configuration, airworthiness status, component history, and the cost remaining before the next major events. That makes them part of the collateral.
The FAA’s maintenance-record rules identify records that owners or operators must retain and transfer. A lender may request more than the regulatory minimum because underwriting asks a different question: what evidence is necessary to support value, marketability, and recovery?

Financing diligence should become the baseline for ongoing monitoring. Preserve the final closing set, accepted valuation, insurance evidence, title work, records exceptions, and maintenance status. Then track changes that can alter value or recoverability.
