QUESTIONS
Registration questions
How many private jets are registered each year in the US?
In the 12 months to October 5, 2026 the FAA issued 4,753 registration certificates to business jets and turboprops still on the register: 3,416 jets and 1,337 turboprops. 740 went to aircraft built that year or the year before; the rest were mostly sales of used aircraft and imports.
What does a new registration certificate mean?
The FAA issues a certificate of registration when an aircraft is registered to an owner. For a business jet that is usually a new delivery, an import or a sale to a new owner. A certificate is not a flight and does not mean the aircraft is new.
Additions, removals and changes of owner between two FAA files: the fleet report for September 2026.
METHOD
How this is counted
- What is counted. The certificate issue date on each registration in the FAA file, for business jets and turboprops still on the register, grouped by calendar month. The 12 whole months before the file’s month are shown.
- What is missed. An aircraft that was registered and then left the register, or was sold again later in the period, shows only its latest certificate. Counts for older months therefore run a little low.
- New aircraft. A certificate counts as a new aircraft when the year of manufacture is the certificate’s year or the year before.

Counts of individually owned or co-owned aircraft under five are shown as “<5”. The full rules are in the ownership report’s method and on the open data page.
